Halloween Pass The Gift Party Game
If you’ve ever tried to keep a classroom full of kids (or even just your own crew at home) entertained during Halloween, you know the struggle is real.
Between sugar highs, spooky distractions, and the constant “what are we doing next?” Finding a fun, screen-free activity that everyone actually enjoys can feel like searching for a black cat in the dark.
That’s where the Halloween Left Right Game swoops in like a friendly little ghost to save the day.
I’ve used this silly story game in my classroom, and let me tell you, it’s equal parts chaos and giggles, and 100% kid-approved.
Plus, it’s so easy to set up, you’ll wonder why you haven’t been playing it every October.
Stick around, because I’ve got a free printable version ready for you to grab and use with your own little ghouls and goblins!

What’s A Halloween Left-Right Story Game?

So what exactly is a Halloween Left-Right Game?
Think of it as a storytelling game meets hot potato, but with way more laughs and spooky vibes.
Here’s how it works: everyone sits in a circle and passes a small prize (or treat) around while listening to a Halloween-themed story.
Every time the word “left” is read, the prize gets passed to the left. Every time “right” pops up, the prize goes to the right.
The story keeps going, usually with kids squealing, mixing up directions, and laughing at the chaos, until the end, when whoever is holding the prize gets to keep it.
It’s super easy, requires zero prep beyond printing the story, and wrapping up a little gift.
And it’s one of those rare activities that’s just as fun for kindergartners as it is for big kids (and honestly, even adults), which is why it’s also a great Halloween party game for kids.
I always use it as a Halloween classroom activity or pre/post trick-or-treat game, and it’s always a hit!
Halloween Left-Right Game Variations
Pass the Pumpkin Game 🎃
Instead of a gift bag, use a small pumpkin (real or fake). Bonus points if it’s painted with a funny face! Whoever ends up with the pumpkin at the end wins a prize. This version is often called the Halloween Pass The Pumpkin game.
Trick or Treat Twist 🍬
Instead of one prize, fill a bag with little treats (stickers, candy, glow sticks). At the end, whoever has the bag gets to pick one item, but then they must pass the rest to the person on their LEFT or RIGHT. Keeps the fun (and sharing!) going.
Another option is to add multiple prizes, which is a great idea if you have large groups. Make sure to space them out.
Haunted Hot Potato 🥔👻
Play the story with spooky music in the background. Every time someone hears “LEFT” or “RIGHT,” they pass as usual, but if the music suddenly stops, whoever is holding the bag has to do a silly Halloween action (howl like a werewolf, cackle like a witch, shuffle like a zombie) before passing again.
Trick Card Surprise 🃏
Slip a few “Trick” and “Treat” cards inside the bag. If the bag stops on you when a LEFT or RIGHT is called, pull out a card:
- Treat card = You win a small prize.
- Trick card = You have to do something goofy, like flap like a bat or walk like Frankenstein.
Monster Circle Shuffle 🧟♀️
Every time the storyteller says “RIGHT,” players pass the gift to the right and either take one step to the right or move one person to the right. Every time they say “LEFT,” do the same to the left. By the end, the whole circle has shuffled around like a bunch of silly zombies!
