Mom and Son Bonding Ideas for Your Bucket List
UPDATED FEBRUARY 8, 2020
There is something oh so special about the bond between mother and son. It's so important to strengthen the mother-son bond because raising boys is tough work! Having regular bonding activities is a great way to strengthen the mother and son bond! I've got the ultimate bucket list of the most fun mom and son dates you'll both love! I've got mom and son bonding activities for all ages from toddlers all the way to bonding ideas for your teenage son.
This mom and son connection is like nothing else I've ever experienced in my life. Which is actually pretty funny because I never ever thought I'd want to be a boy mom.
Boys weren't something I really understood, given that I've only got sisters. So naturally, I wanted a girl but life doesn't always give you want you want.
However, it usually does have a way of giving you exactly what you need. I had no idea how much I needed this little boy in my life.
Now, I'm looking forward to building a strong foundation to nurture that mom and son connection. I love the idea of special mom and son traditions to bond over.
I can't wait to do more and more mom and son bonding activities together as he gets older since he's just a toddler now. Thinking about all the adventures to come, I wanted to make a sort of mom and son bucket list, if you will.
Even if I have more kids one day, I think it's important to spend one-on-one time with each child. Memorable mom and kid dates that are just for them.
These special mom and son dates will stay with them forever and us too. These activities help moms to learn what things their kids love and build a bond with shared interests.

Why Should You Go on Mom and Son Dates?
Intentional Parenting
I think this special one-on-one time is so important because it makes you actively engage with your child. No distractions. When you plan these special dates, it makes you more intentional in your parenting.
We often get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of daily life and so we often don't realize that we aren't mentally always there with our kids.
We may be sitting right next to them but our mind is on the million other things that need to get done. Having these special dates makes me focus on nothing else but getting to know my kid and spending quality time together.
Excitement and Anticipation
It gives both of us something special to look forward to. Planning and setting a special date tells your child how much we value spending time with them and listening to their thoughts. It will be something you both look forward to and count down til.
It Helps to Foster an Everlasting Bond Between Mother and Son
As I mentioned earlier, this is a time where you both learn more about each other and bond over mutual goals or interests.
There's a reason companies use team-building outings to facilitate teamwork. It's because you can't help but bond.
It puts you in a different environment than the usually adult-child dynamic where you are the authority and they just have to listen. It's far less formal and lets your child open up. It's a nice feeling to be a fun mom once in a while instead of the disciplinarian all the time.
You want to build this strong bond so you can raise your wild to be a gentleman one day. It's easier to do when your child looks to you as his guide and role model.
Outdoor Mother and Son Activities
We'll start with some awesome outdoor mom and son activities to get you both active and having fun. I find boys are full of energy and definitely need an active outlet to burn it. Why not jump in and get active too.

Great ideas! I have 4 boys, so I can tell you individual time with them is important! I love your suggestions and I'll be putting them to use!
This is a wonderful list! My son just turned one and I'm already looking forward to the special mother/son activities to do together. We're planning on a trip to the zoo soon!
"Build a block tower then knock it down"
This never gets old. Never.
Ha ha ha!
Seriously, if I asked him if he would like to build a tower and knock it down RIGHT NOW, he would do this. I think this is a natural instinct in ALL boys!!!
ahahah BOYS! gotta love that boy mom life 😀
I love this! The bond between my son and I is so special! Having sweet dates just the two of us is so important.
I love all of these ideas!
As a mom of 4, I always to give each a fair share of my attention. The two youngest seem to get more than the two older who are a bit more independent. I do try to plan alone time with each of them. It doesn’t always mean a special planned outing. My oldest often gets a special activity or homemade popcorn and a TV movie once all the younger kids are in bed, or one of the younger ones comes grocery shopping with me when my husband is home to watch the others.
@Tamara | The Gutz Life, hi do you have girls? If so what do you do too equalise their time?
As of right now I'm just a boy mom but I would love to have daughters one day! I grew up with all girls so girls I get. You can definitely do any of these activities with your girls too but you know them best so planning a special day doing what they love can mean taking turns with the girls. Either alternating weekends or brining all the girls along but each one gets to pick the activity on their day (they get to be the leader).
I love these ideas. Our next mom and son bonding day is coming up this weekend and I decided to take him to a art gallery. We will have lunch there. Then we will go on a relaxing stroll around the town to the shops.
Awesome ideas. I saved this pin and will be applying these to our home school routines 🥰📚
Yay! I'm so happy you like them! We've been doing a lot of this stuff too since we've been stuck inside
Great ideas!!! My son is still 11months old, I'm looking forward to a great time with him. Thanks
My son and I, he's 12 now, used to build trains together. We would make the tracks go all around the room and under furniture. He had two kinds the wooden trains and the Thomas the tank that actually ran on a battery, but we discovered that we could put a Thomas engine on the wooden track and it would run there too. Then we would use wooden blocks and make cities and plastic animals and make a zoo, we got farm animals from the dollar tree and made a farm. Then we got tanks and soldiers and added an army base. We would do this up until he was about 8 or 9 and kind of lost interest in the trains. But he will still say, remember when we would.... and I'll say do you still want to? and he kind of grins. Deep down I know the answer is yes. He does it with his little cousins now when they come over.
Another thing we really enjoyed and got a ton of play time together with was pirates from the Playmobil company. They had amazing ships and on Amazon you can buy motors to make them run in the water. We got a ton of fun out of those.
I love nerf guns but not a fan of shooting them at each other so we have target games now where I'll set up appropriate nick nacks around the house and we will challenge each other to see who can shoot that frame or who can hit the ceiling fan....I'm an older mom and he's my youngest and I have rheumatoid arthritis so I don't move fast, but occasionally I'll shock and shoot him out of nowhere and the game is on. But that kind of play is really left up to his next sister in line, poor boy she is 8 years older than him. : ) He has to put up with a lot of girls in his life and old parents.
Wow, Janet! It sounds like you and your son are super close! I love all these fun activities you've listed. It makes me so happy to hear it's stuck with him all these years- so sweet!
These are all activities that every child would love, girls and boys.
definitely! we can all take part!
